Getting funding for marine conservation. There is much less money available and less willingness of governments and people to protect the oceans than land.

Communication. We have large teams of people, each with their own opinions and priorities, trying to work together. Just as in any relationship if we do not work to communicate effectively, including listening to each others opinions and priorities, completing a project or finding a solution to a problem is much harder.

I’ve got to go with the communication answer as well. When people get focused on what they need to get done, they don’t always listen so well to what other people are telling them, especially if it doesn’t work with their plan. They might hear it, but it doesn’t always sink in. Getting through that block (and unblocking my own head) is by far the most common problem I’ve encountered.

Time.
There is never enough time to accomplish everything I want to accomplish in a day.
A slight fix to this issue that I have found to be successful is better planning. If you can plan to allocate your time better, then you can often accomplish your goals with room to spare.
Plan ahead. Plan for mistakes. Plan for unknowns. Just plan and you will be ahead of many of your peers. -

The most prolific problem, which may have been touched on in other answers, is creating stable networks of communication across diverse research projects for creating successful teams. It may sound like a basic answer, but it’s one of the greatest challenges in science. Being a good listener and storyteller is more important as technology continues to grow. Diversity and equality is key!

Funding. In order to do research, you need funding, so sometimes we can’t start research projects for a few months while we wait to hear back about funding.
