Not counting any safety-related issues, the worst thing to happen during an experiment or task is if you make a mistake. However, it is not the actual mistake that is the worst part. The worst part is not learning from the mistake.

This is a very sad story. Once, a professor in Italy told me that I could never be an engineer because I was a female and I needed to focus on building a family. It crushed my heart. However, I decided I wanted to prove him wrong because nobody can tell somebody that they can’t do something only because of their gender.
When I landed my first internship at NASA, I sent him a picture of me with my badge in my office. I did it not for revenge, but to show him that he was wrong and hopefully, he won’t say those terrible things to other women.

That’s a tough question. I’ve talked about nearly blowing myself up in other answers, and that was certainly bad. I’ve had a few other safety mishaps, too. I’ve had days with a lot of pressure or was given deadlines that I just can’t meet, or bad exams when I was in grad school. Some of my worst things were how other people treated me- or worse, if I got angry or frustrated and was not as professional as I should be. That always really bothers me, because my own actions are something I have control over.

The most recent horrible day I can remember is when we were just about to shut down for Covid. Everyone was scared and nervous, and most importantly- distracted. Fortunately nothing bad happened, but with some of the stuff we do, it could have been really bad if someone made a mistake.

I once got a small acid burn in the lab (I was in proper lab safety gear too).
