Hello! Well, sometimes in science you have to buy things and products that are very expensive and you can not buy by yourself. So scientists need to apply for projects that give us money to buy things for our labs and our experiments.

Funding is required for research or a study to occur. Unfortunately, opportunities can and are often dictated by the dollar. If money is made/success occurs, positive results can gain further funding which can inspire/promote growth. Funding is what keeps the bills paid and the research opportunities/positions available.

It’s not about making money for a project, it’s about funding. You need to have money to buy equipment, pay staff, and publish the results. I do not make money on the projects I work on (other than my salary) but some of the projects can cost a lot of money.

Unfortunately, at the end of the day, it comes down to the business side of things. If you don’t make money, how do you pay the bills to keep the company going? As nice as it would be to get to do every project or great idea, you still have to pay for what it costs to get the equipment, chemicals, etc. The money made on projects then can go back into other projects or bills needing to keep the company running.

I do not think the money is the important part but more so a necessary part. Ideally, science is never done for profit but for the quest of knowledge and advancement. However, most projects will require both people’s time, hardware and/or software to accomplish the goals. There must be a source to compensate the scientists for their time as well as provide the necessary equipment to accomplish the tasks.

      Good question.

A lot of the equipment we use is very high tech, very precise, and not produced in super-large quantities. As a result, it’s very expensive. The detector alone that I use for my work is around $60,000. The rig I run is probably about half a million dollars in equipment. It amazes me how much money gets poured around in a science lab, and I still have a little heart attack sometimes when I see how much something costs.

However, if you try to do the work without the equipment, you won’t get the kind of results you need, so you need to shell out the money if you want the results.

      Hello,

      Thank you for the question.

If you are asking about the money needed to fund a project, it is not only important but sometimes absolutely necessary.

Without funding, a project might night even get started. If a project is valuable enough (meaning it will make the world or lives of many people better) then the funding to make that project happen is the 1st step. Without it, many valuable advancements in our lives would not have happened.

Now, if you are asking about getting PAID to do a project, I can’t answer for others, but outside of needing income for my family, I get involved with projects that I have a personal passion to complete.

As someone more famous and smarter than me said: “If you find a job you love, you’ll never work another day in your life…”

Funding is required in order to do research, as supplies needed, instrumentation needed, and operating costs can add up to be quite expensive. Also, funding can help pay students to work on research projects.

That’s a great question… a science project usually costs a lot of money from buying tools and equipment and we sometimes spend our own money at first. But, I think it’s partially important to make money for your science project later to just cover up our expenses later.

I think it’s not always true that it’s important to make money for a science project. If a science project can make an impact on our environment and humanity (even on a small scale), I think it’s more important for you to create and make it happen than thinking of making money for a project at the beginning. I hope that I can answer your question 😀

Every science project needs to be supported by a grant. A grant is a very detailed description of the objective of the project, the needed resources, the people that will work on it, and the importance of making the project happen. As you can imagine, all of these important factors need money: you need them to pay the scientists that will work on the project, to pay all the instruments you will use. Therefore, it’s not a matter of making money but a matter of being supported and funded by that money.

Making money is important so we can use it for making just 1 science project work – if it is the one that improves our lives the most.
