If I won the prize money, I would give away the prize to an ambitious group of high school students who want to work on one science project and need a budget to work on it.
The reason it’s important is that I have seen a lot of students who have a lot of ideas, but they did not use the ideas to make it happen. It’s a great opportunity for me to know a group in person and support them as much as I can to accomplish their project. I also want to know how students solve problems and overcome challenges, and then use these methods to teach other high school students.

I would use the prize money to support the robotics team at my local high school. I am all about encouraging young people in science, and the kids on these teams work so hard and are able to accomplish such amazing things. But so many schools mainly fund sports teams- science, music, and art programs don’t get the same funding. So supporting this team of 55 diverse kids who are working their butts off the create a robot that can shoot hoops and climb monkey bars for a competition? That’s money well spent in my book!

I would donate the prize money to MISS Elasmo. This is an organisation founded and run by black women in shark science to support the future generation of underrepresented women in shark science. Historically, shark science has been a bit of a boys club and an expensive field to break into because you are required to volunteer or even pay to get experience. MISS Elasmo is giving opportunities to women from minority groups and training them in some shark science methods for free! This will help level the playing field when these women apply for graduate positions and jobs. More diversity in science means more ideas, which is an amazing thing!

I think the way we think we will use the prize money is important because it shows the intentions of our work.
Re-investing into programs like these and other STEM related programs is important. By us dedicating our time to a project, so we are able to sustain future programs shows we see value in the program for developing the future Scientists!

Community engagement and empowerment are very important, especially in environmental-related projects. Community science and outreach in different local communities can help bridge the STEM gap, and encourage people to pursue STEM paths.

I don’t know if my work will win the money. To be sincere, I didn’t apply to participate in this phenomenal initiative for the money. I applied because I think it’s fundamental to inspire the new generations, show them that everybody can become a scientist if it’s what you want to be no matter your gender, your upbringing, and your story. For this reason, I will invest the money to keep doing the work that this initiative started. I want to go around the high school in the area where I live and offer my time to students that wants to know more about science and scientists.
